Victory in Arendal

In September 2024, we received the exciting news that Hille Melbye and Edit Landskap have won the architectural competition for the design of GARD’s new headquarters in Arendal.

Inspired by the southern Norwegian landscape and GARD’s proud history, the project’s main ambition is to harmonize with its surroundings and give GARD a new face towards the world.

The proposal, named Holmene, was honored as the best submission in the competition by a unanimous jury. In their assessment, the jury emphasized its exciting conceptual approach, both architecturally and in terms of planning, as well as its ability to inspire enthusiasm. The proposal was also praised for its cohesive expression, seamless integration with existing buildings, as well as its multifunctionality and dual programming.

A Site-Adapted Concept

The archipelago around Arendal originally consisted of islets, islands, and coves along the mainland, which over time have been filled in with rigid edges and plateaus. The organic and free-flowing logic of the islet landscape has inspired the development of a site-adapted approach in Varmekrogen. By shaping the new volumes and outdoor areas with curved forms, the design is anchored in the southern Norwegian coastal landscape, creating a friendly and gentle expression in relation to the existing building.

The Task

The expansion is divided into two phases, totaling 3,500 m² BTA. The first phase will house Gard’s new representation area, including a new main entrance and reception area, common areas, a canteen, and meeting room facilities. The second phase will primarily accommodate new office spaces based on Gard’s workplace concept.

Phase 1 will serve as an important meeting place for employees and visitors, and the further development of the schematic design is already well underway.

Gard

GARD is a leading global marine insurance company with its headquarters in the idyllic Varmekrogen in Arendal. Today, they have 13 offices worldwide, over 650 employees, and are one of Arendal’s largest employers, with approximately 400 employees at the headquarters.

When they decided to expand their premises while staying at their current location, they recognized that the task would be complex and demanding. To ensure a variety of solutions and approaches, they announced the project through the Norwegian Association of Architects.

We are therefore proud to have emerged as the winner among strong and talented competitors and look forward to assisting GARD in writing a new and exciting chapter in the company’s proud history.

Together, we will create a warm and vibrant heart in Varmekrogen, connecting buildings and surroundings while activating the area with new opportunities and services. GARD deserves a worthy headquarters for its global operations—one that reflects the company’s values and ambitions. At the same time, the project will give back to the city and the people who move through the campus area.
