Hille Melbye will assist the Hammersborg Area Forum and OMA in developing a floor plan for New Hammersborg.
Statsbygg, OBOS, Møller Eiendom, Höegh Eiendom, AB Invest, and Storebrand Eiendom have joined forces to establish the Hammersborg Area Forum. One of the tasks of the area forum is to identify the scope of action for the adjacent plots to the government quarter and to evoke a common vision of how the new Hammersborg can be. Hille Melbye will assist in the process of preparing analyses, vision, and floor plan.
A link in the city
The floor plan will identify success criteria for a successful reopening and revitalization of an exciting area in downtown Oslo that has long been inaccessible. New Hammersborg is intended to become a multifunctional and vibrant neighborhood that connects Youngstorget and Tullin in the east-west axis, and St. Hanshaugen and Grensen in the north-south axis, explains architect Kaja Melbye of Hille Melbye Architects.
“The new government park, and the sum of all the projects under development in the area, will create a much-needed connection across Akersryggen that could change the city’s center of gravity,” she explains.
– Strong character and identity
The Government Quarter sets the framework for the development of adjacent areas, such as the new Hammersborg. Kaja Melbye explains that New Hammersborg is not only intended to be a passage for transit but a place where residents will stop and spend time.
“Hammersborg will become the most important transformation area in downtown Oslo, and it is important to consider connections, opportunities, and programming of indoor and outdoor spaces on the city floor. New Hammersborg should not just be an area people pass through, but a destination with a strong character and identity.”
Work on the area map has begun and will continue throughout the fall.
