Oppsal Arena
Oppsal Arena was built in the late 1960s, with extensions and additions in 1980 and 2005. The facility required extensive rehabilitation both indoors and outdoors. The renovation began in the fall of 2019, and the scaffolding was removed just before Easter. We were so pleased to see the upgraded (though unfinished) facades that we felt like sharing this with others right away.
Together with the client Kultur og idrettsbygg, Rambøll and Hille Melbye Architects developed concepts and solutions for the renovation in the early phase and worked closely with the client through cost estimates and tender documents. In the detailed design and execution phase, we collaborated with WK-Entreprenør as the general contractor.
All rooms originally used as locker rooms on the first floor were rehabilitated/restored as locker rooms, and significant changes were made on the second floor to accommodate offices, meeting rooms, and a larger training room. An important part of the project was also the upgrade of ventilation systems and heating, integrating them into the existing low floor-to-ceiling heights. All new technically demanding ventilation and heating systems were incorporated into a new extension optimally positioned for the new ventilation system.
To maximize the benefits of upgrading the ventilation system, the roof and facade were insulated, combined with an expansion of the second floor, resulting in a more aesthetically pleasing facade and simpler and better details regarding heat loss and thermal bridges.
When investing significant resources inside the building, it was particularly gratifying to go the “extra mile” with a material upgrade of the facades, contributing to an overall positive transformation of the sports facility.
Hille Melbye Architects have been the lead architects for the entire renovation project and have had the pleasure of following the project from start to finish.
After nearly a year of work involving demolition, rehabilitation, and expansion, Oppsal Arena is expected to be completed by the summer of 2020.
