Bristol Spa is a unique development project that combines historic preservation with modern wellness. The project is based on the Bristol Hotel and the neighboring property at Kristian IVs gate 9, a heritage-listed masonry building from around 1892 in Neo-Renaissance style, which has been transformed from premises previously used as various nightclubs into a vibrant offering for both hotel guests and the city’s residents.
Hille Melbye Arkitekter facilitated the ambitious rehabilitation through structural design, technical detailing, and application processes. Establishing a spa with a pool inspired by Moorish traditions, saunas, hot and cold plunge pools, as well as a dedicated snow room for refreshing contrast, within a building from 1892 presents a number of challenges related to detailed design and building physics, particularly concerning indoor climate and moisture control.
A strong collaboration with Monn Interior Architects has contributed to the project’s success. Visitors can now enjoy three floors of wellness, tranquility, and Moroccan-inspired luxury.
The building is listed on the City Heritage Office’s “yellow list,” and a constructive dialogue with the heritage authorities has been an important part of the process. The project also includes the installation of a new external elevator and a connecting walkway to link the two buildings, enabling internal circulation between the hotel and the spa. On the ground floor, assistance has been provided in establishing a new pub.
Bristol Spa represents a holistic development of existing buildings, where preservation, architecture, and new functions interact. In this way, older urban structures can be revitalized and bring new life to the street level through public-oriented offerings.
