The new expansion of Gard’s headquarters in Varmekrogen, Arendal, is the result of a winning architectural competition, conducted under the auspices of NAL in 2024. Hille Melbye carried out the competition in collaboration with Edit Landskap.
Based on the southern Norwegian landscape and Gard’s proud history, the project’s main ambition is to adapt to its surroundings and give Gard a new and iconic face toward the outside world.
With the concept Holmene, the project presents an exciting conceptual approach, both architecturally and in terms of planning. The proposal has also been highlighted for its cohesive expression, seamless interaction with existing structures, as well as its multifunctionality and dual programming.
A Site-Adapted Concept
The archipelago around Arendal originally consisted of islets, islands, and coves along the mainland, which over time have been filled in with rigid edges and plateaus. The free and organic logic of the islet landscape has served as inspiration for the development of a site-adapted approach in Varmekrogen. By designing new volumes and outdoor areas with curved shapes, the approach is anchored in the southern Norwegian coastal landscape, creating a friendly and soft expression in relation to the existing building.
The Task
The expansion is divided into two phases, totaling 3,500 m² GFA. The first phase will house Gard’s new representation area, including a new main entrance and reception area, common areas, a canteen, and meeting room functions. The second phase will primarily accommodate new office spaces based on Gard’s workplace concept. Phase 1 will become an important meeting place for employees and visitors, and the further development of the schematic design is already well underway.
GARD
GARD is a leading global marine insurance company with its headquarters in the idyllic Varmekrogen in Arendal. Today, they have 13 offices worldwide, over 650 employees, and are one of Arendal’s largest employers, with approximately 400 employees at the headquarters.
With the new expansion, GARD gains a warm and vibrant heart in Varmekrogen, connecting buildings and surroundings while activating the area with offerings and opportunities—a worthy headquarters for the company’s global operations that reflects its values and ambitions. At the same time, the project aims to give back to the city and the people who move through the campus area.
