The Norwegian Grinding Wheel Factory in Nydalen/Storo is entering a new chapter in its rich history, with outward-facing facades and a new extension.
Nydalen’s New Gathering Place
Slipeskivefabrikken is centrally located at the transition between Storo and Nydalen in Oslo. Positioned directly across from the upcoming new park in Nydalen, the renovation connects to the development of an enhanced urban ground between Storo and Nydalen. As a historic building with a strong character, Slipeskivefabrikken has the potential to become a long-awaited gathering place and a key venue for the district.
A Factory with History
The building was originally constructed in 1916 and produced grinding wheels under various ownerships until the war. During the German occupation, it was attacked and partially blown up by the Pelle Group, traces of which can still be seen on the facades today. In more recent times, the building has been used as office space and a fitness center, and now it is time to write a new chapter in its history.
Storo Meets Nydalen
The renovation of the existing building includes transforming the ground floor into outward-facing dining spaces. Windows and door openings will be restored and returned to their original appearance, while the roof, cornices, and base will be refurbished to give the building a much-needed upgrade.
New Building Addition
A new five-story volume is being added to the existing structure, replacing a smaller extension from the 1970s. The design respects the existing building, continuing its materiality and window detailing. In this way, the extension is interpreted as the fourth expansion of the factory, which was originally built as a simple gable-roofed structure.
