Sædalen Church is a modern church building and an inclusive meeting place for the entire local community. With its open and inviting architecture, flexible spatial solutions, and carefully designed outdoor areas, the church is created to embrace both the sacred and the everyday – a place for faith, fellowship, and life.
The church is positioned as a landmark in the heart of Sædalen, marking a new center in a district characterized by nature, families with children, and strong volunteer engagement. The building is designed with a clear architectural concept: an axial movement from the church hill and square, through the sanctuary, and toward the altar – a spatial journey that invites reflection and togetherness. The material palette, with sand‑bleached brick, perforated surfaces, and warm natural materials, gives the building an expression that is both timeless and adapted to its place.
Sædalen Church has been developed in close collaboration with the congregation and the local community, responding to a clear need for more meeting places and leisure activities – particularly for children and youth. The church square, with its café, activity rooms, and flexible gathering spaces, accommodates a wide range of activities throughout the week: from worship services and concerts to homework help, youth gatherings, and discussion groups.
The outdoor areas are just as important as the building itself. The church park and church forest are designed with paths, an amphitheater, a cherry grove, and playgrounds, providing space for both activity and tranquility. The project has a clear sustainability focus, with durable materials, solar panels on the roof, geothermal heating, and nature-based stormwater management. Together, these elements create a church that stands firmly – both physically and socially – as a unifying and sustainable focal point in Sædalen.
